Background of the Study: Mental health issues are among the most significant public health challenges globally, and the stigma associated with mental health conditions often exacerbates the suffering of patients. In Nigeria, including Taraba State, mental health conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders are often misunderstood, leading to discrimination and isolation for those affected (Adebayo et al., 2023). Nurses, who often interact with patients on a daily basis, play a critical role in reducing stigma through patient education, advocacy, and the promotion of mental health awareness.
Despite their key role, mental health nurses frequently face challenges in overcoming societal prejudices that exist around mental illness. Stigmatization often leads to delayed treatment, worsened mental health outcomes, and reduced social integration for those with psychiatric disorders. Research has shown that healthcare professionals, including nurses, are central to combating mental health stigma by providing empathetic care, educating families, and engaging in community awareness programs (Okoye et al., 2024). However, there is limited research on the impact of nurses' efforts specifically in reducing mental health stigma in Taraba State. This study aims to explore how nurses in Taraba State hospitals contribute to reducing stigma and improving the treatment experience for individuals with mental health issues.
Statement of the Problem: Mental health patients in Taraba State often face significant stigma, which prevents many from seeking or adhering to treatment. Stigma is a barrier to mental health care, perpetuating negative stereotypes about mental illness and leading to social exclusion. While nurses are essential in providing care and support for mental health patients, the effectiveness of their role in reducing stigma in Taraba State has not been thoroughly explored. This study seeks to assess the impact of nurses' roles in reducing stigma against mental health patients in Taraba State hospitals.
